Let me tell you how weird it is to go from having help there if I need it, to spending my day alone managing all I need to. It was the craziest most exciting feeling ever. While things get a little busy and sometimes the phone doesn't stop ringing I was so proud of myself for getting through a day alone with no issues or complications along the way. I was verifying insurance ALONE, taking the lead on booking new patients, demonstrate my initiative on faxes and call backs. I was on a roll. Before this, I didn't think I would be able to handle things alone especially being new with no experience, so by throwing myself into it all and realizing I could do it, I really felt that "AHA moment". I've never felt so accomplished by anything other than passing calc tests.

I personally don't feel anything I learned in high school prepared me for my internship. I'm using different software programs and people skills to get through the days and realizing that a lot of my time junior year was wasted learning the pythagorean theorem when I haven't even needed to think about using it. The skill I have used most at my externship is professionalism and ensuring I sound mature in phone conversations instead of like an 18 year old being submerged into a new environment. My externship has had no similarities to any project I have done in all 4 years of my high school experience. I'm being exposed to new things with little assistance from those around me (by choice) I am having to figure things out for myself and gaining a true interest and admiration for what I am doing. This externship excites me and prepares me for real life out of high school, it has pushed me to feeling more secure alone in the world instead of afraid of what could come.
So far working here has been amazing, all of the staff are extremely welcoming and willing to assist in any way they can. The most challenging part for me has been verifying insurance because it was exposure to a whole new system that I had no previous knowledge about. Figuring out how to get the correct information by asking the right questions was challenging but Sam helped me with learning all the right questions to ask. All of my coworkers as well as my mentor have been amazing in assisting me while i'm getting the hang of things but also stepping back so I can learn for myself and gain experience.
I am so excited for internship. One of my mentors previous jobs was a trauma nurse which is what I want to become so its really cool to hear what he has to say about the journey. The environment i'm in is so peaceful and welcoming, I already feel like I have been there for a long time. I'm really excited to learn more about trigger points and treatments used for different diagnoses. I'm nervous about being on my own so soon but I definitely think I can handle it.
